Jesse Love Disqualified, Sammy Smith Wins Xfinity Race at Rockingham

The NASCAR Xfinity Series made a triumphant return to Rockingham Speedway. The North Carolina Education Lottery 250 saw a dramatic twist, with Sammy Smith being awarded the victory after the initial winner, Jesse Love, was disqualified for a rule infraction.

This unexpected turn of events provided fans with a rollercoaster of emotions. It showcased the intensity and unpredictability that makes NASCAR so captivating.

The Drama Unfolds at Rockingham Speedway

The race at Rockingham Speedway was a highly anticipated event. It marked the series’ return to the historic track.

Fans were treated to an action-packed race that featured 14 cautions for a total of 83 laps. Nine of those cautions occurred in the final stage.

The excitement peaked when Jesse Love, who initially crossed the finish line first, was disqualified due to a violation of Rule 14.14.2.I-5.h concerning trailing arm spacers and pinion angle shims. This rule requires that all mating surfaces of these parts must be in complete contact with each other, which Love’s car failed to meet.

Sammy Smith’s Fortunate Turn

With Love’s disqualification, Sammy Smith was declared the winner. He secured his first victory of the season and the third of his career.

Smith, driving the No. 8 JR Motorsports Chevrolet, also claimed a $100,000 bonus as the winner of the final Xfinity Dash 4 Cash race of the season. Smith expressed his gratitude and surprise, noting that although it was a tough way to win, he was happy with the progress his team had made.

Key Moments and Highlights

The race was filled with notable performances and dramatic incidents. Here are some of the key highlights:

  • Parker Retzlaff achieved a career-best second-place finish.
  • Harrison Burton secured third place, marking AM Racing’s best-ever Xfinity Series finish.
  • Brennan Poole finished fourth, his second top-five finish in the last four races.

Challenges and Crashes

The race was not without its challenges. Ryan Sieg led a race-high 77 laps but was involved in a massive crash on Lap 241 when Christian Eckes ran out of fuel on a restart.

This incident caused a chain reaction that dashed the hopes of several drivers, including Justin Allgaier, Carson Kvapil, and Brandon Jones, who were contenders for the Dash 4 Cash bonus.

Nick Sanchez, who led for 52 laps, also fell victim to the Lap 241 crash, which led to the first of two red-flag periods. Despite winning Stage 1, Sanchez’s race ended in disappointment.

Carson Kvapil led 47 laps in the second stage, battling fiercely with Love for the lead. His efforts were also thwarted by the crash.

Notable Incidents

Katherine Legge’s sixth Xfinity Series start ended prematurely on Lap 52. After failing to qualify during time trials, Legge took over JJ Yeley’s ride and started from the rear.

Her race was cut short when William Sawalich made hard contact with her No. 53 Chevrolet, causing it to spin and collide with Kasey Kahne’s No. 33 Chevrolet. Kahne, making his first series start since 2017, managed to finish 14th despite the setback.
