Meet shell
For as far back as I can remember, I always loved cars, motorcycles, bicycles, and all things mechanical -how they worked, why they worked and how to make them faster and “cooler looking”.
I grew up in Brooklyn, New York, fortunate for me my older brother was a gearhead way before me. It was easy to follow in his shadow. If you didn’t understand racing where I grew up, you might as well have been from Jupiter. If it wasn’t the Dodgers, you were just wrong.
In the mid-fifties we found a group of guys in Brooklyn that loved car racing. We had a 1956 Plymouth retired taxicab that we made into a “late model stock car” and towed south to race with Nascar. I was 10 or 11. We raced against Lee Petty, Curtis Turner, Fireball Roberts and the like and I was hanging out with the big guys.
I was hooked. I have been a fan of oval track racing from Trenton Speedway at the New Jersey Fairgrounds to Langhorne, Pa. Reading Speedway for sprint cars.
I even went to Formula Ford school at Skip Barber in Lime Rock Conn.
When I moved to Los Angeles I got a job as a Docent at the Petersen Automobile Museum in the now famous Vault. That helped to round out my classic car education! I was also friends with George Barris and his family, Gene Winfield (he should rest in peace) and Craig Breedlove was a fantastic guy.
I’m happy you want to share my passion for racing here at Legends of American Automotive History.
